Our Project Portfolio
It’s true – we’ve been around. From our first opera in Vienna in the late 1800s, to the Sydney Opera in the 1970s to a business centre in India, we always strive for the best. Just have a look at our portfolio.
Historical
Over 160 years of history

Founding
In 1854, the Austrian monarchy was at the height of its wealth – and right in the middle of it, two companies that later would become Waagner Biro, were founded by Rudolph Philipp Waagner and Anton Biró respectively.

The New Opera
1869 marks the beginning of the expansion of theater throughout Europe with the opening of the new Vienna Opera. The stage was built by Ignaz Gridl, whose company would join Waagner Biro in 1934.

Safety First
Together with the Viennese architects Fellner & Helmer, Waagner Biro develop the first fire-protection appliances for theaters. Our research is the basis for theater safety regulations since 1911.

Reconstruction
After the war Waagner Biro is heavily involved in reconstructing Austria and Central Europe. Amongst others, we re-built the Burgtheater – one of the world’s most prestigious theaters.

Sydney Opera
While Waagner Biro had been successful internationally since the 50s, the opening of the Sydney Opera marks our global breakthrough. Both the steel shells and the stage equipment were provided by us.

Computerised Control
Only few years after the first IBM-PC, Waagner Biro acquired Guddland Digital to develop our computer based C⋅A⋅T control, which to this day is the most advanced control system on the market.

New Paths
In 2018 the three divisions of Waagner Biro – stage, steel, and bridges – split up, leading to new agility and improved focus. Since then, Waagner Biro Stage Systems has been part of grosso Holding.
